Dear Julian:

I think that Carl Hewitt is one of the leading idea generators in programming
languages.  As such you can't miss by hiring him.  His students produce
theses that are genuine scientific contributions.  I would rate him above
Patrick Winston in this respect.  His weak point is organization.

I cannot asses his classroom ability, but he personally interacts with students
very well.
